The main purpose of this study is to investigate the non-formal (athletic and artistic activities, tutorial courses) and informal activities (games with friends, reading books, visiting libraries etc.) that contribute to the process of learning school-age children in the city of Alexandroupolis, as well as the free time they spend on them and the incentives that motivate them in such activities. In addition, it is investigated whether the gender, class, and parents’ profession affect students’ choices. The survey was conducted in April 2017 in randomly selected schools of the city. The sample consisted of 60 pupils of 5th and 6th grade of elementary school, of 60 students of 2nd and 3rd grade of secondary school and 60 students of 1st ,2nd and 3rd grade of lyceum, 180 students in total, who filled out anonymously and voluntarily a questionnaire in their class that lasted approximately 20 minutes. The analysis of the data of the survey was done with the Windows7 Excel Office program. The reasons that affect the most of their choices were mainly the pleasure they felt doing the activity and the contact with their friends when they were engaged in activities that seem to be of major importance to the lives of these age groups. Referring to informal activities, the students spend most of their time a week in company with friends and watching TV for the same reasons as non-formal ones. Most girls were engaged in volleyball and dancing, while boys with football, basketball and martial arts.
