The application of ICT (e-learning) in early childhood education and its utilization in the multicultural classroom (Master thesis)

The introduction and use of ICT in school is an irrefutable fact and is considered by most educational systems as a prerequisite to improvement of learning and teaching. However, the use of computers in early childhood education has been the subject of major controversy, with critics arguing that the computers are dangerous for health, learning and creativity of children and supporters arguing that the computers, if used properly, can contribute to personal, social, emotional and cognitive development of children. Recent studies indicate that the use of computers makes the process of learning more interesting and entertaining, creates collaborative learning conditions and underlines the facilitative and collaborative role of the teacher. Teachers, although the majority having the necessary knowledge to use computers, do not use it as a cognitive tool but as a handy visual medium of instruction. Thus, the ongoing training of teachers is essential for the effective integration of ICT in the classroom. There are many types of educational software aimed at early childhood: the "closed type" software based on behavioral learning theories and "open type" software based on constructivist learning theories and allow creative expression and interaction of children. Teachers need to be able to evaluate educational software, choose those that are developmentally appropriate for preschool children and use them in a constructive way. Finally, as we see in recent years significant changes in demographic data of school classes, the computers and the Internet provide many opportunities to investigate different cultures and effectively promote acceptance of cultural diversity, providing new possibilities, in regard of communication and interaction
