Διερεύνηση των πεποιθήσεων τσιγγάνων μητέρων για την κοινωνική και γνωστική ανάπτυξη των παιδιών τους: Η περίπτωση δύο οικισμών της Κομοτηνής (Master thesis)
The present study constitutes an attempt to comparatively examine the parental belief system of gypsy (roma) mothers who reside in two gypsy communities in Komotini, using semi-structured interviews. The aims of the study were to examine: a) the idea they have about the 6 year-old child in connection with the desirable or undesirable qualities they refer about certain aspects of the child’s social and cognitive development, b) their beliefs about particular developmental milestones typical of the 6 year-old child’s social and cognitive development, according to the relevant literature, as well as the acceptable lines of action which reveal the “value stretch” of the mothers’ developmental expectations, c) their causal attributions concerning the social and cognitive qualities regarded as important for the 6 year-old child and the accomplishment or retardation of the milestones presented to the mothers in the form of scenarios, d) the networks of information and support in their parental role and e) their expectations of their children’s future, in the basis of the influence of the eco-cultural context and the socio-economical status of the families. Beyond that, the examination of the proactive and reactive practices the mothers refer that they choose in connection with the accomplishment of the important qualities and milestones by the child is reflective of their parenting style, taking into account the Baumrind’s typology. Moreover, the mothers’ rich descriptions of the social and cognitive qualities of the 6 year-old child and their idea of the “adaptive adult’, are analyzed in the basis of the orientation to collectivism or/and individualism. The focus on the examination of the gypsy mothers’ belief system is based on the interest of the psychological research in the last decades, placed on the comprehension of the developmental paths followed by the minority groups and on the different academic progress of the children who live under the stressor of poverty or/and lower minority status. The examination of the cultural and the ecological context is considered essential for understanding and dealing with these differences. The findings of our research support this theoretical idea. In addition, the -emic procedures we followed, facilitated the approach of the different meaning the gypsy mothers give to certain aspects of the development of their children, examined by the present study.
