Portfolio as a tool of teacher’s professional development: theory and research (Master thesis)

This project deals with how a portfolio can contribute in the professional development of a teacher. This issue was looked into in both at theoretical and research level. In the theoretical part, many important terms for this project are clarified. More specifically, the meaning of professional development is defined, many of its features are presented along with the stages of a professional career and the basic models of professional evolution are recorded. Furthermore, there is the outline of a portfolio as a meaning, its contribution is examined, and the different kinds of it are presented as well as the purposes that it serves. Then, the different stages of the creation of a teacher‟s portfolio are outlined, along with its content and a suggested structure, the prerequisites that it must fulfill in order to be successful, as well as some advantages and disadvantages of this tool. This first part ends with a review of Greek and international bibliography and the conclusions and observations that derive from the theoretical approach of the issue. In the second part, there is the presentation of the research concerning the contribution of the portfolio in professional development, which was carried out using as samples a teacher of Primary Education and an Educational Consultant of Secondary Education and as methodological tools the half-structured interview and the data of the subjects in the portfolio. This part concludes with the analysis and interpretation of the research results as well as any conclusions that derive from it.
