Thematic, scenic and linguistic approaches to prologues of school plays in Greece from 1896 to 1974 (Bachelor thesis)

The research we have conducted refers to prologues of theatrical/drama scripts for children, expanding chronologically into 4 different eras/periods. More specifically, in the first period (1896-1921) the main topic dominating is children's pleasure, to which they refer the majority of these prologues scripts of this period. Subsequently in the second period (1922-1939) we take information mainly about school festivals and children's drama, while some other prologues refer to the development of the national feeling. Additionally, in the third period (1940-1949) we get acquainted with the reason why the playwright has chosen the topic of their play, while in many prologue cases we have a historical retrospect as far as children's drama is concerned. Finally, in the fourth period (1950-1969) we see that there are some positive remarks in these prologue excerpts, either made by the playwright themselves or by someone else, and at the same time we are given historical information about the play for the first time. In studying the language of these scripts we note that Pure Greek dominates, gradually giving its place to Demotic Greek which contains some Pure Greek characteristics, while at the same time we are given information about the stage design/scenery and the direction, almost exclusively in the third and fourth period. In conclusion, the prologues of children's plays that we have been studying in all four periods show great variety of topics as well as common or different characteristics in linguistic and stage design/scenery aspects
