Statistics anxiety of pre-service teachers: an investigation using the emotional Stroop test (Bachelor thesis)

Nowadays, there is a growing interest in the literature about assessing statistics anxiety through cognitive and affective tasks. The present dissertation was conducted as a part of the requirements for the Bachelor’s Degree in Education in the Department of Primary Education of the Democritus University of Thrace. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between statistics anxiety and information processing mechanisms related to statistics in a sample of 233 pre-service teachers. In this context, it is examined whether an attentional bias task, the emotional Stroop task, is appropriate for assessing statistics anxiety and can be used as an alternative to the “traditional” multiple-choice questionnaire. In addition, we investigate the relationship between the new task and other factors, such as, attitudes towards statistics, mathematics achievement, cognitive reflection, past experience in statistics, perceived usefulness of statistics and study orientation in high school. The results did not confirm our main hypothesis regarding an existing relationship between statistics anxiety and attentional bias. The study findings are discussed on the basis of their potential use for understanding the nomological network of the factors that affect the learning of statistics in tertiary education. In conclusion, no evidence was found that the emotional Stroop task can provide a good alternative to the traditional multiple-choice questionnaire for measuring statistics anxiety
