Adult schools in Evros prefecture (Master thesis)

Αντωνιάδου, Μαρία/ Antoniadou, Maria

Adult education is an important issue, especially nowadays that the society is constantly changing and requires increasing amounts of knowledge and skills. The first organized efforts for establishing adult schools began in the 20th century. Over the years numerous educational and training programs have been providing adults with the knowledge and skills they seek. Second Chance Schools are one of the main stages of adult education. With their open and flexible nature, they offer a second chance to adults of all ages and allow them to obtain a high school diploma. Their aim is to deal with unemployment and social exclusion, as well as enable familiarity with new technologies and new business requirements of employers. Their existence becomes really important during the last years of the great economic recession, with the changes in working conditions and the rapid increase in unemployment. The purpose of the present thesis is the investigation and detailed presentation of the institution and the activities of Adult Schools of Evros Prefecture during the period of the great economic recession, i.e. from 2010 to today. In particular, in this thesis we attempt to present the institutional framework of Adult Schools and their historical evolution. Furthermore, we present the purposes they serve, their functions and the consequences of the economic recession on their operability. As part of this survey, we conducted an extensive literature review including secondary sources (books, scientific articles, the Internet, published records) concerning the institution, social control, education, adult education, adult school and unemployment. The research is based on qualitative data analysis using the structured interview method, with open questions from a representative sample of teachers from the Second Chance Schools of Alexandroupolis and Orestiada. The purpose of the present Master dissertation is to present the operation of the two Second Chance Schools of Evros Prefecture through the information and opinions given by their educators. Using the structured interview method, we collected information from three instructors of Second Chance Schools of Alexandroupolis and Orestiada. Through their responses we highlighted the value of the education of trainers and the need for continuous state support. We noted the important role of the active engagement of trainees in the teaching process, the self-discovery of knowledge and self-assessment of their effort. We also present the friendly atmosphere between trainers and trainees within the school premises. In addition, we refer to the Second Chance Schools curriculum and activities, which are formed by the trainers, according to the needs and interests of trainees. We continue with the advantages and disadvantages of Second Chance Schools versus typical middle schools, and finally we present some of the problems that the schools are facing today, i.e. during the period of the economic crisis
