Gendered representation into the recent language textbooks of all classes of the greek primary school: a critical overview (Master thesis)
Μουσουρίδου, Γραμματούλα/ Mousouridou, Grammatoula
This study examines the gendered representations and stereotypes built into the recent language textbooks of all the classes of the Greek Primary school. More specifically, the aim of this study is to examine gender roles as projected in the texts and images of language textbooks, in order to detect potential stereotypes and prejudice which are reproduced and may consequently affect children’s construction of gender identities. With the help of a combination of two methods, that is the qualitative content analysis and critical discourse analysis, we explore and present examples of texts and images where sexist stereotypes are traced. Our analysis shows that social discrimination is reproduced by school textbooks and, in particular, the dominance of the male gender is confirmed in the family, in work settings and in society in general, while the female gender is marginalized as powerless-inferior
