Muslims’ prayers in Greek on the Rhodes Island: a place of convergence (Master thesis)

Καραγιάννη, Αναστασία/ Karagianni, Anastasia

In the present research study I focus on issues arising from and with concern to a set of written prayers in Greek (deposed by Muslims), which are found on visitors’ books at the mausoleum / türbe of Murat Reis, which is located at the Mandraki harbor on the Rhodes island. At this ‘place of convergence’, that is, the specific prayers found on the visitors books, I am witnessing some very interesting linguistic, religious and cultural phenomena, which could be probably characterized as mixed, hybrid, or syncretic phenomena. After a short ‘presentation’ of the Muslim community of Rhodes, which presence on the island dates from the beginning of the 16th century until nowadays, I move on to research aspects –such as the language or the education– that contributed in the making of the community’s present profile. Adopting an interpretative stance, I set as the starting point of my research, the discussion around the issues of cultures and religion –especially on folk and orthodox Islam. The research methodology I use for analyzing the content of the written prayers is a mixed one, synchronizing the hermeneutics data analysis with the Qualitative Content Analysis, to reach a more detailed ‘picture’ of the phenomenon under study. The two basic thematic axis upon which I categorized and analyzed the prayers, were the Language and the Religious Beliefs. At the end of my research study I deliver a discussion on the “prayers’ inner truths”, and I reflect further on issues about the criss-crossing of borders –either linguistic, cultural or religious– thus contributing to the overall theoretical discussion on such concerns
