The social and educational role of museum nowadays in special education issues: investigation the viewpoints of museum educators and teachers of special education school units (SMEAE) (Master thesis)

This dissertation researches the social and educational role of museums as regards in Special Education issues. In particular, it investigates and records the viewpoints of museum educators and teachers of special education school units (SMEAE), so as to outline the current state regarding museums do for accessibility, the design and implementation of educational programmes for people with disabilities and special educational needs (SEN), but also to illustrate the relationship and cooperation that could be developed between the two institutions. The subject is tackled at a theoretical and empirical level. In the first part, the theoretical framework of the subject is presented and analyzed. Specifically, an attempt is made to review the related bibliography: a) the characteristics and features that reflect the social and educational role carried out by the museum, b) the characteristics of disability and how it is seen in museums in terms of accessibility and c) the concern that governs museums today regarding people with disabilities in terms of accessibility and design of educational activities-programmes. In the empirical part, the main principles, which the paper aims to explore, are described and the research methodology is presented. The research sample consists of seven museums and eight special education school units (SMEAE). For the evaluation of the viewpoints of the sample participants, the semi-structured interview was selected as the research tool. Open-ended questions were sent via email to those in charge of the museums, and focus groups were conducted with the special and educational staff. The research reveals the need for immediate improvement practices on behalf of museums regarding the design layout in order to respond more to the needs of people with physical, mental and emotional needs and to access browse and actively become involved with museum objects. Also, it is deemed as necessary the education and training of museum educators concerning special education issues, such as systematic communication and cooperation between the museum professionals and the teachers of Special Education School Units (SMEAE). The objective of both institutions would be to function complimentary. For this reason it is proposed that a close cooperation between museums and Special Education School Units should be developed at all levels: in the configuration of design layout, the implementation and evaluation of educational programmes
