Women as elementary school principals: a qualitative approach (Master thesis)

Παλάζη, Δήμητρα/ Palazi, Dimitra

This thesis is concentrated in the female headteacher in primary education. Both the theoretical and the research approach are studying the presence, the role, the management style, the ambitions, the obstacles and the reasons of their under- presentation in the management of elementary schools in contrast with their dominance in the teaching process. In the study, we are using interview as research tool. The sample of the research is men and women principals of elementary schools in the area of Evros. The particular research tool is being used in order to capture the personal views of the sample about the effect of gender in the school management. Both the theoretical and research approach lead to the conclusion that the women are still being under- presented in the management of schools. The last years, there is an obvious improvement but stereotypical beliefs, personal and social factors hinder the professional development of women
