The cooperation between school’s unit principal and parents’ association: case study (Master thesis)

The present dissertation is a theoretical and practical attempt to approach the institution of Parents Association aimed to contribute as much as possible in emerging the meaning of cooperation of this institution with the School's Unit Principal so that new ways of improving communications and collaboration between these factors will arise. In our research we carry out structured interviews with Principals of School Units and members of Parents' Associations from ten School Units of elementary education within Xanthi's prefecture. It is our major concern that the questionnaire is answered only by concerned and active members of the Parents Associations, members of the administrative council and also by the most active members. Analysis and interpretation of the data from our research shown that the Parents Association is entangled with the School Unit but is not really involved. Its role within the School Unit is not clearly identified and its collaboration with the School's Unit Principal is considered occasional evincing of the lack of effective communication. However, active participation by members of Parents Association is contributing in prevention of conflicts within the School Units along with fund raising for it. The progress of children's school achievement also seems to be affected in a positive way. Operations of bigger School Units seem to be unevenly more effective and improved against smaller School Units through the cooperation of the Principal and the Parent Association. Although the members of the Association appear to be satisfied by the School's Principal, especially when the Principal maintains a democratic style of management, there are questions raised on justifying this satisfactory collaboration if their communication is considered typical and remotely direct
