Handling the ethnocultural identities of teachers through their relation with preschool minority children of Trace: the example of processing narrating texts in kindergarten (Doctoral thesis)

The present thesis aims to record the opinions of the teachers that were working at the kindergarten schools of Rodopi and had minority students in their class during the school year 2004-05, regarding the preschool education of the minority, the processing, and narration of texts in the classroom and the way that they handle the different ethnocultural identities at school. We also observed and wrote down activities of processing, narrating texts that were implemented by the teachers, aiming to highlight their educational practices, the way they handled the identities in the classroom, as well as the correlation between teachers’ opinions and their educational practices. The research tools that we used were made by us and involved questions that we made use of during interviewing the teachers and an analysis frame for our activity observation results. The results of the interviews and the field observations were analyzed in a quantitative and quality way. Additionally, after teaming up the results we proceeded into creating the teachers’ educational profiles. The results that came out of our research reflect a provided preschool education that is nation-centered and promotes assimilation, since the teachers acted according to their ethnocultural identity, leading in this way the minority students to educational exclusion and marginalization during the activities of processing, narrating texts in the classroom. Kindergarten aims, as it arises through the interviews and the field observations, to eradicate every element of difference at students and to cultivate a united, undifferentiated ethnocultural identity. Moreover, we underline that the results showed that most teachers’ opinions identify with their educational practices
