The presentation of the greek national identity in the history school textbooks of the primary school (Master thesis)

The aim of this thesis is the analytical research and presentation of the fundamental elements that constitute the Greek national identity, as they are being projected and shaped by the History school textbooks that are used by four grades of Primary School (C, D, E, G), and by the Curriculum that is used in Primary Education. This research, was conducted since January 1st, 2016 until August 31st, 2016, and used both quantitative and qualitative methods of survey. The conclusions that were extracted, are cited below. First of all, these textbooks represent the continuity and the historical trajectory of Hellenism through the Ages. In order to achieve this goal, they focus mainly on those elements that connect the nation with the territorial concept of the homeland and the civilization it expresses, and secondly, with the bonds that are created by the common myths and history, the economic and the legal system. A very important conclusion, lays on the references to the Greater Hellenism, that resides outside the Greek State, and the “trauma” that was caused by the Fall of Constantinople in 1453. On the other hand, a great number of questions arise as a result of the inequality between the aims that have been set and the content of the textbooks, or the presentation of historical facts and persons. A typical example is the aim that demands the cultivation of a common European identity, that has a relatively small number of pages, or the lack of clear reference to the need of cultivation of a Greek national identity
