Mathematics achievement of muslim minority children in Thrace aged 11-16 years (Bachelor thesis)

The Project “Education of the Muslim minority children in Thrace” is a multi-year, long-term endeavour for the improvement of the education that is provided to the children of the Muslim Minority in Thrace. It is a product of the strategy of the Greek State toward the Minority citizens, which started to take shape in the ’90s. The Project organizes compensatory classes for Minority children at secondary and high schools in the three prefectures of Thrace. These are additional hours of teaching, and they include, among else, classes in the subject of Mathematics. The basic goal of these classes is to improve these students’ comprehension level of the mathematical content and, consequently, of their school performance. The aim of this study is to investigate the mathematics achievement of the Muslim minority children aged 11-16 years old, in the three prefectures of Thrace. The results obtained from the data analysis showed that students face most difficulties in stochastic mathematics and geometry, independently of their grade and religion. In general, Minority students have lower mathematics achievement than Christians, but the Muslims of Rodopi score higher than the rest students of the minority
