Female representations in the Grimms’ tales and in their contemporary adaptions/transcriptions (Bachelor thesis)

The aim of the present dissertation is to highlight the important contribution of child’s literature in the depiction of the two genres, as in the classic fairytales of “Cinderella”, “Red Riding Hood” and “Snow White”. At the same time, the present dissertation attempts to examine the subversive depictions that have derived in the contemporary remakes or transcriptions of these fairytales. The dissertation is divided in two parts: The first part of theory and the second part of the text analysis. In the first part, we clarify some key concepts, such as the ideology in regards to the gender while at the same time we examine their interconnections with child’s literature. Furthermore, we examine social issues, such as the patriarchic model and the position of women both in the past and the present. Moreover we investigate the social framework of the Grimm Brothers as well as the ideological influences that permeate their work. At the end of the theoretical part, we analyze the value of intertextuality in the evolution of child’s literature and we present the methodology the present dissertation employed to analyze the texts. In the second part of the dissertation, we list the classic fairytales of Grimm Brothers and their contemporary transcriptions-remakes. The texts, both classic and contemporary were analyzed using thematic analysis, an approach that essentially allow us to encapsulate both the similarities as well as the differences between the two, always with regards to the depiction of femininity. At the same time, we investigated the distinction of heroines in good and evil, the role of male, the motive of beauty as well as the sociocultural framework, in which these stories unfold
