How social changes affected the representation of the female gender in children’s illustrated literature: the paradigm of witches (Bachelor thesis)

The present study examines the change in the portrayal of witches as characters of children’s illustrated literature, as a result of social changes from the 1970s onwards. The final ambition was to explore the ways of reversal of the stereotypes that govern the classic witch figure, aiming to adumbrate the modern witch portrayals. The sample was composed by illustrated children’s books printed between 1987 and 2016. Qualitative research was used as the research method. The paper is consisted of four main sections. The first section is referred at the interaction association between social reality and literature’s ideological content, as well as the consequences of children’s literature socialization attribute. In the second section, the portrayal and purpose of “evil” in children’s literature is mentioned, subsequently the political agenda behind the social demonization of witches is analyzed tracing back at the Witch Hunt and at last the classical witch portrayal is deconstructed, along the social and literary movements of the last six decades and their impact on social reality and by extension in literary production. The third section is about the selection process of the research methods and the exploration parameters that is followed by the analysis of the subversive elements of witches’ portrayals in the chosen novels. The last section sums up the subverted stereotypical elements, namely the breach of the witch’s identification with evil and fear and her connection with everyday women, challenging the polarization between good and evil and the use of magic for good cause
