Design, implementation and evaluation of science educational materials for kids with special needs (Bachelor thesis)

This dissertation talks about natural sciences and how teachers can teach them to kids with special needs. Specifically we focused on the design, implementation and evaluation of educational materials for kids with special needs that have to do with natural sciences. At first we studied in detail the concepts of special education and mental retardation. We presented some of the definitions of special education and the categories of special needs. Furthermore a more widely accepted definition of mental retardation was given as well as a classification of the levels of mental retardation. After we searched information about the teaching of people with mental retardation. We emphasized on how important early educational intervention is as well as the need individualized training program, depending on the educational needs of each individual. In the area of natural sciences, we focused on the teaching of natural sciences at preschool and primary school. As part of the research it was inevitable to not deal with early conceptions on natural sciences. In particular we emphasized on children’s conceptions on electricity, weight and flotation-sinking. After all this bibliographical review we made an attempt to combine those two concepts, special needs and natural sciences. This leads us to search more information about teaching natural sciences to children with mental retardation. Moreover we studied similar researches that were done in Greece and abroad. This is aimed at comparison of our results with the results of other investigations. Finally we present the conduction of our research concerning the design, implementation and evaluation of educational science material for children with special needs in preschool and primary school
