Advanced mathematics in primary education: a teaching intervention with concepts of number theory (Bachelor thesis)

Advanced mathematics and primarily concepts of Number Theory, which constitutes a special branch of Mathematics, are frequently met nowadays in elementary mathematics teaching. The present report examines the extent to which students in the last two primary school grades respond to advanced mathematical issues. The results show that students of this age are capable of working effectively around these ideas, disclosing the ways of thinking and the problem-solving strategies that led them to go into fair depth into the advanced mathematics issues at hand: the set Zn, prime numbers with Goldbach’s conjecture and the Fibonacci sequence. The relevant ideas constituted part of the experimental teaching approach employed in the study, which was based on activities compatible with the principles of discovery learning
