Συμεωνίδου, Φιλία/ Symeonidou, Filia

The goal of this task is to describe the feminine figures in Chekhov’s dramaturgy, especially all female figures in his plays: The Seagull, Uncle Vanya, The Three Sisters, The Cherry Orchard. The first part focuses on Chekhov’s life and refers to daily life in Russia at the times of the last czar, to Chekhov’s social work and especially to his contribution by shedding light on the living conditions of the prisoners in Sakhalin Island. At the same time this article presents the position and the role of women in this prison – island and generally in czarist Russia. In the second part the plots of the four aforementioned plays are presented where the feminine figures – roles are analyzed. The task is completed with critical comments. Chekhov, apart from a great author was an exceptional man who helped other people in many ways and offered his medical knowledge for free. In his works we can see the socioeconomic circumstances of his times. In these everyone is a protagonist who- through their indifferent daily life- seek for the meaning of life and envision a better future. The heroes experience unrequited love and the futility of life. They believe in a better tomorrow, far away in the future, and in a death which will absolve them of all their problems. At the same time, his works are characterized by the natural and musical element. Nature empathizes with the heroes while the author’s love for Russia is especially emphasized in The Three Sisters. Biographical elements are also very apparent in most of his works which are always considered classic and modern
