Shyness, peer victimization and personality (Bachelor thesis)

Λιακοπούλου, Διαμάντω/ Liakopoulou, Diamanto

The purpose of this study was to investigate possible interactive links between shyness, the Big Five Personality traits (openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, neuroticism) and the three types of peer victimization (physical, verbal and relational), in a sample of 284 (52% boys, 48% girls) Greek preadolescent primary school students. Results indicated no significant association between gender and shyness whereas girls scored higher in Conscientiousness and Agreeableness, compared to boys. No further significant associations were found between gender and the rest of the Big Five Personality traits or the three types of peer victimization. Positive associations were found between shyness and Neuroticism, relational and verbal peer victimization while negative associations were indicated by the study’s results between shyness and Openness to experience as well as shyness and Extraversion. The results of a multiple regression analysis outlined that both boys and girls with higher scores in Openness to experience and extraversion appear to have less chances of showcasing shyness characteristics, whereas students that have, in the past, been relatively victimized by their peers have higher chances of experiencing feelings of stress and fear in the face of social interaction. The findings of this study emphasize the higher chances of shy children to become possible targets of victimization by their peers. They’re being discussed so that they can be used for the timely briefing of primary school teachers and the creation of prevention and intervention strategies, aimed to the smooth incorporation of shy children in a healthy school environment
