Resilient students in science: secondary analyses of PISA 2006 data (Bachelor thesis)

Recently, research efforts in education have rapidly increased, due to the diversity in the school environment. This diversity originates from the variety of economic, social and cultural living conditions of students, given the social class to which they belong. In this context, recent research has focused on the investigation of the characteristics possessed by resilient students. Resilient students are those students, who may be experiencing tough situations in their daily life (like poverty, war financial crisis, etc.), but still exhibit a satisfactory or even good performance at school. The aim of the present research is to investigate the characteristics of resilient students in Science, within the framework of a large international student assessment program, PISA 2006 for Greece. PISA is an international survey conducted every three years aiming at evaluating the performance of 15-year-old students who are reaching the end of their compulsory education and are faced with difficult living conditions. More specifically, we study the school and educational characteristics of resilient and non- resilient students, the differences they exhibit towards Science, as well as, the learning strategies they employ in Science. Data analysis was based on both descriptive (frequency tables) and inferential statistics (logistic regression). Results have shown that, the most important characteristics which can differentiate resilient from non- resilient students are hands-on activities employed in Science, self-efficacy in Science and frequency of Internet use for recreational purposes. These findings are critical for intervention design and implementation aiming to develop student resilience in Science
