The evaluation of primary school-age children’s language development constitutes an important need for both the clinical and educational practice. Language Sample Analysis (LSA) is considered a method of language assessment with the highest ecological validity. In addition, LSA is considered to provide the most detailed information concerning almost all aspects of young children´s language development. This specific language assessment method aims at creating suitable conditions which would encourage the child to communicate naturally. Thus, the collected language sample for analysis and evaluation should be representative. In the bibliography, one can find several language development indexes (e.g., Mean Length of Utterance (MLU), Number of Different Words (NDW), and Clausal Density) pertinent to LSA for multiple languages. Additionally, the available age-standardized scores allow the comparison of the verbal ability of each child with that of typically developing children matched on age. As far as we know, until now there has been no structured elicitation and analysis of the previously mentioned indexes in Greek language. The overall aim of this study is the elicitation, recording and analysis of language samples from 57 children of the first and second grade of Primary School by means of an elicitation protocol including conversation, image description, and storytelling. The playful procedures were conducted on an individual basis and lasted approximately 10-15 minutes per child. Τhis pilot study provides data on these indexes in Greek-speaking children during their early school years. Due to the limited sample of the present study, but also to the important individual differences that are expected for these ages, the differences between first and second graders are not deemed significant. These results are discussed in relation to equivalent results in other languages, and constitute an initial base for further research on Greek language assessment
