Environmental Education and Museum: designing a biodiversity program in a museum (Bachelor thesis)

Κουτσούκη, Ελένη/ Koutsouki, Eleni

It is well known that Environmental Education was not given the appropriate importance by the Greek State and schools in the past. However, an attempt is made over the last years, for Environmental Education to be approached by various programs and excursions, aiming to cultivate students' attitudes and values. Nowadays, the general perception of school visits in museums is often labeled as a painful one, as it consists of a boring tour without the possibility of developing interactions between children and the teacher. Modern museum education is overturning this concept by designing programs focusing on active participation and experiential learning of the child. Biodiversity is a broader concept, which enables teachers to approach its units with a variety of activities and programs in and out of school. This assignment will present the union of the three values, as mentioned before, in an environmental education program on biodiversity which will be held in a Natural History Museum. Firstly, there is a theoretical approach on the concept of environmental education, museum and biodiversity. Next, the materials, the means, the activities and the space for the design of the program are presented. Finally, limitations and future extensions are mentioned. The final pages of the assignment include an appendix with images and materials designed to help the reader's understanding
