Perceived acculturation strategies of indigenous young people in Greece towards six ethnic groups (Master thesis)

Immigrants and refugees who settle in Greece face a number of challenges related to the processes of acculturation and intercultural contact. Although most published studies focus on acculturation strategies adopted by immigrants themselves, the study of acculturation processes from the view of the majority group is object has been met with equal research interest. The aim of the current study is to investigate the acculturation strategies adopted by students in Greece towards six major ethnic groups that have settled in Greece during the last decades (Albanians, Syrians, Pakistanis, Chinese, Polish people and Ukrainians). Acculturation is studied within the context of the Interactive Acculturation Model of Bourhis, Moïse, Perreault and Senécal (1997). The study sample comprised of 146 final year students at the Department of Primary Education of the Democritus University of Thrace (27 male and 119 female). The main instrument of the study was the Host Community Acculturation Scale (HCAS), which was translated and adapted in the Greek language. Results showed that participants of the majority group tend to endorse the positive strategies of integration and individualism, rather than the negative strategies of assimilation, segregation and exclusion, towards all six ethnic groups. Moreover, correlations were found between acculturation strategies and theoretically relevant criteria, such as social dominance orientation, ethnic identity and political orientation of the study participants. Moreover, participants can be divided into two or three distinct groups with regard to their endorsement of positive acculturation strategies. The study results are discussed on the basis of their potential use in the design of interventions and the development of intercultural empathy and cultural empowerment of the host community.
