School education in communion of minors at the Detention Center in Corinth (Bachelor thesis)

The present research examines how a school within a Detention Center for minors operates, as well as the opinions of the minors for the provided education. The role of the family environment is stressed, and emphasis is also laid on the beliefs of the minors about education in general. The research was conducted at the Detention Center for minors in Corinth. Overall,6 semi-structured interviews were conducted with young inmates-aged between 15-18 years old, who were taking classes in the school of the center. The research was analyzed using qualitative content analysis and was divided in three main sections; The minors’ education before confinement, during confinement and their plans for the future considering their education. The discussion examines young inmates discourse, which led us to the conclusion that the school doesn’t seem to fulfill the needs of the specific social group, their views of the school hasn’t changed during their confinement and their main future plans for acquiring education focus on practical level how education can help them to secure adaily wage.
