Animals in illustrated children's books of ecological interest to Greek and foreign writers from 2006 to 2016 (Bachelor thesis)

Animals as symbols in the field of mythology and allegorical narratives are a popular technique of indirect message transmission that has survived over the centuries. Since modern times is characterized by transitivity on every level, it is important to explore the symbolic character of animals in children's literature, especialy in the field of environmental education and ecology. The present research focuses on the anthropomorphic animal figures as presented in children's illustrated ecological books of Greek and foreign authors from the decade 2006-2016. The exploration of anthropomorphism in the appearance of animals as children's heroes is considered a starting point for studies on empathy as well as on the humanitarian values imprinted through the above technique in children's narratives. The present work analyzes the content of 10 books with ecological interests, whose leading heroes are animals, and are addressed to the 6 to 9 year old audience. This work is an extension of the diploma thesis of Charitou A., an alternative proposal aimed at highlighting humanitarian values and empathy; attitudes promoted through anthropomorphic heroes. The findings of our research have highlighted the contribution of anthropomorphism to the cultivation of empathy and humanitarian values by matching the vision of the reader with that of the hero by setting the proper framework for dealing with the problems that the second faces. The parallel contribution of anthropomorphic heroes to the ecological expression in children's literature, to delectation, spiritual culture and environmental education is a lucrative ground that calls for further exploration.
