The results of linguistic development concerning kindergarten ages using the method of analysing samples of natural speech (Bachelor thesis)

The assessment of the preschool children’s linguistic development is important for both the clinical and educational practice. Language sample analysis is suggested to be the language assessment method that can provide the most detailed information about many dimensions of linguistic development. Several language indices resulting from the analysis of language samples are found to be reliable and are used internationally for the assessment of pre-school children. For the interpretation of these indicators, however, language-specific age-related criteria are deemed necessary. Since so far such criteria are not available for pre-school Greek-speaking children, this study aimed to collect and analyze spontaneous narrative language samples of pre-school children. In particular, 36 children aged 4 to 6 years were asked to re-narrate a story (Frog Story). The language sample of each child was transcribed, analyzed and coded as for various linguistic dimensions. The results highlight the developmental sensitivity of several of the language indices analyzed (total number of utterances, total number of words, number of different words, dependent sentences, number of verbs and different types of verbs). On the contrary, differences based on the gender of children are not found to be significant. Finally, many of the linguistic indices studied show statistically significant and in some cases high to very high correlations. The results are discussed in relation to earlier findings for other languages.
