National and religious dimensions of 25th March celebration in kindergarten schools in Alexandroupolis (Master thesis)

Ιωάννου, Ελισσάβετ/ Ioannou, Elisavet

In the present study we aimed at examining the national and political dimensions of the national celebrations that took place at seven kindergartens in Alexandroupolis. Our main objective is, on the one hand, to identify the way that the basic concepts, related to a national celebration, and more specifically, freedom, peace and war have been expressed, and on the other hand to understand how these celebrations contribute (in latent way or not) to the creation of the national identity. The national celebration chosen for the purposes of this study is the celebration of the 25th of March National Holiday. The interesting aspect of this particular celebration is that it is a double celebration: a national and a religious one. As a result, an additional parameter that has been examined is whether the particular kindergarten teachers chose to refer to both aspects of this celebration, or, if only one of the two aspects was chosen as the main reason for the celebration.
