A research on the conceptualization of geometrical transformations by 5th and 6th grade pupils of primary school (Master thesis)

The geometric transformations constitute an important part of geometry, they are rich from the conceptual point of view and they also cultivate important spatial abilities. This research explores the evolution of the 5th and 6th grade pupils' discourse, as regards the geometrical transformations, the role of the concrete and digital tools in this evolution, as well as the role of art as a framework for the conceptualization of geometrical transformations. Taking into consideration two theoretical frameworks, Commognition and Semiotic Mediation, an intervention was designed based on the theoretical example of a 10-hour design research. It was implemented into the mathematical club of a class. It was conducted in three phases, in which the pupils’ evolution of discourse on transformations was explored, through activities on paper and in the dynamic environment of Geometer's Sketchpad. In the end, the pupils created their own projects with the help of GSP. The discourse of all pupils seemed to have evolved into more mathematical versions. In particular, the use of concrete tools seems to have enhanced the enrichment of their vocabulary with dynamic / informal terms. The use of the GSP helped them to focus on mathematics of transformations and enrich their vocabulary with more formal mathematical terms. Their gestures functioned as words and as visual mediators who supported the expression of mathematical ideas. Art as a framework seemed to have helped all pupils to conceptualize mathematical meanings. Our findings confirm that pupils, having been given the appropriate tools and involved in particular activities, can have rich conceptualizations of transformations and develop important skills.
