3rd Primary School in Alexandroupolis (Master thesis)

This study aims to present the contribution of the 3rd Primary School of Alexandroupolis to the culture and education during the period 1950-1965. The school according to the evidences is the first school that was built in Dedeagats, later Alexandroupolis. The most likely and prevalent date of the building’s erection is 1866. The school archive was destroyed, when the building was used by the Germans and Bulgarians occupants (1941-1944). The archive that was saved is about 1945 and after, it is kept in the General State Archives in Alexandroupolis. The material that could be studied and analyzed for the purposes of education and culture was that of the period 1950-1965. From the bibliographic review emerged the concepts Dedeagats, Alexandroupolis, Education, Culture, “Model” Primary School and School Archive. The method that selected for the study of the archive was the content processing with methodological triangulation: study archive and interview. The results from this study show that there was a restriction in the new students’ registrations with examinations and registration fees. Innovative educational programs were implemented with success and the school took the title of informal “Model” school. The school’s theatrical performances with the original scenarios were well known in the city. An original theatrical scenario and a play’s summary with photographic material were found. The school also distinguished in music, with its mandolin, operetta and choir. From 1950-55 a mute school cinema operated in the school. The school excursions were predestined. The school personnel took measures for protecting the health, the nutrition and wellbeing of all students. Moreover, it had done great work for charitable purposes. Finally, the 3rd Primary School of Alexandroupolis had a remarkable action and operation from the post war years to 1965.
