«Roma» or «little Muslims»: (Master thesis)

Κατσανεβάκη, Άλκηστις/ Katsanevaki, Alkistis

The present research paper addresses the issues of both the construction and the management of cultural diversity in the framework of formal state preschool education. More specifically, this thesis aims firstly to record, study and interpret the patterns of hetero-determination formed by teachers working at kindergartens in Thrace about the ethnocultural identity of a specific group of kindergarten students, namely the group that seems to have the lowest financial means and status in the highly hierarchical society of the Muslim minority in Thrace. Secondly, based on the teachers’ notions, the paper seeks to examine the extent to which the teachers’ constructions about these students affect and eventually shape and determine their educational practices. This study has been based on the qualitative social research; The data was obtained through ten semi- structured interviews with educators working in the cities of Alexandroupoli, Xanthi and Komotini. The data analysis was conducted on the basis of the grounded theory. The analysis of the data has revealed the prevalence of the assimilative pedagogical model, the educational exclusion of these students from the educational practices as well as, most importantly, the educators’ ignorance and reluctance to implement contemporary pedagogical approaches in the multicultural environments where they work.
