Αργυροπούλου, Αλεξάνδρα/ Argyropoulou, Alexandra

Natural disasters are one of the biggest dangers that pose a threat to the human life. Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, floods and landslides comprise the most important natural causes that endanger humanity among the centuries. They bring numerous consequences to the human environment, especially in the economic and social sector, to the community‘s urban planning, and to the human psychology. The role of the local and state government is deemed crucial for the restoration and rebuilding of the affected community. The first part of the study is dedicated to the nature and the mechanics of the natural hazards as well as their impact to the human environment. Accounts are being made of disastrous events, in order to define how they affect people’s lives, as well as of the civil prevention and protection plan against the natural disasters. The second part studies the earthquake of June 20th 1978 that hit the city of Thessaloniki. Τhe earthquake‘s aftermath in the economic ,social and cultural sector, the city’s urban planning and the measures taken for its restoration and rebuilding investigate. Lastly, the consequences of natural disasters can be decreased by proper educational intervention at schools. In numerous countries, including Greece, the education on natural disasters is acceded to the courses of study. After close examination of the courses of study of above-said countries, the use of new technologies to facilitate academic lecturing about seismic hazards is suggested.
