The study of environmental problems in Greek children’ s literature (Master thesis)

The present thesis investigates the contribution of fairy tales to Environmental Education and more specifically to the understanding of environmental problems. In more detail, the present study seeks to: (a) record the environmental problems referred to in the eco-friendly fairy tales, 2000-2018, (b) investigate the causes, impacts and ways of dealing with the issue of marine pollution, and (c) examine the crowd, as well as the kind, of coping strategies, proposed in fairytales about sea pollution. The method used is Content Analysis of a Sample of 42 Tales. The results of the research are: In the pre-school ecological fairy tales of the period 2000-2018, a number of environmental problems can be approached, either directly or indirectly. The content of the majority of fairy tales, approaching the issue of marine pollution, is described as "Satisfactory", which has emerged from the multitude of reports included on the causes, effects and ways of dealing with them. Finally, according to the third research question, we focused on the content of coping strategies. The results showed that the majority of fairy tales contained a small number of references to the modes of treatment, while the suggested modes were more practical. Examining the content of eco-friendly tales highlights the educational nature of Children's Literature with influences from Environmental Education and its positive impact on young readers in shaping cognitive and ideological perspectives
