Καβαλλιεράτου, Αγγελική

In the present study an attempt is made to study and investigate the relationship between the existence of a stroke and the appearance of a sleep disorder. Stroke is the irreversible damage to the cerebral parenchymal vasculature resulting from discontinuation of blood supply to the affected area or from bleeding as a result of rupture of a vessel. In recent years, several studies have been studying the onset of sleep disorders following a stroke, a link that is the case hypothesis of this work. This hypothesis is controlled by providing a questionnaire based on the PSQI, Berlin, STOPBang, and RLS scales for Restless Legs Syndrome in 30 patients. The results of the research revealed a correlation between the quality and duration of sleep, the high BMI, the high blood pressure and diabetes with the high chance of sleep apnea and OSA. According to the results of Berlin test 60% of the patients had High risk of Sleep Apnea. On STOPBang questionnaire results showed that 36,6% of the patients had high risk of OSA and 43,3% of the patients had intermediate risk of OSA. Also, 16,7% had restless legs syndrome. Finally, 96,7% of the patients had satisfying sleep during their hospitalization while 26,7% of the patients during their hospitalization had trouble sleeping caused by the medical intervention. In the period of hospitalization, the patients said that their total daily sleep ranged from 6 hours/day to 16 hours/day with an average of 10 hours/day.
