Σύνδρομο ευθραυστότητας, λειτουργική ανικανότητα και νευρολογικό έλλειμμα σε ασθενείς μετά από εγκεφαλικό επεισόδιο- ερευνητική (Master thesis)

Introduction: Frailty is a common biological phenomenon among elders that leads to worse health outcome. The Fried index is a common tool in order to assess the frailty level (Fried et al., 2001). The index categorizes elders into three groups. In the first group known as Non-Frail elders do not suffer from the syndrome, in the second
group known as Pre Frail, people are in a pre-state of the syndrome and in the third group, known as Frail, people are already suffering from the syndrome. Stroke is also common amongst elders and is related to a high risk of death and deterioration of their health status.
Aim: The aim of the study was to assess the relation between frailty and stroke and whether stroke could have an impact on the gravity of the syndrome. Also it was questioned whether the Fried index could be used to assess the level of frailty in elders who have survived from stroke. This study is part of the “Frailsafe” program, which subject is “Sensing and predictive treatment associated co-morbiodoties using
advanced personalized models and intervations “, funded by the European program HORIZON 2020.
Evidence-Method: 54 elders were examined in this study. 23 had suffered a stroke at least one year ago and 31 had not (Control group). The exclusion criteria from the study were age under 67 years of age, bed bound patients, and people who suffered from dementia (mini mental <24). Each subject was personally interviewed and the
question sheet included personal questions (age, sex, weight, height, living conditions, social activities etc), the Fried index and also assessment scales of their physical, mental and psychological status. The results were analyzed using the statistic program SPSS 17.0.
Results: From the stroke survivors 2 (8%) were categorized as Non Frail, 9 (39%) as Pre Frail and 12 (52%) as Frail. From the Control group 6 (19%) were found to be Non Frail, 16 (52%) Pre Frail and 9 (29%) Frail. Frail subgoups of both groups (Elders with stroke and control group) had the lower scores in all assessment scales. Statistical difference was only found between the two major groups only in the case of
VAS Stress scale. Conclusion: Stroke does not seem to affect the health status of frail elders. More specifically no statistically significant difference was reported between the group with stroke and the Control group, when it came to physical, emotional, mental and 11
nutritional status. Although the number of participants was small, the results of the study showed that stroke does not increase frailty, at least when it comes to subjects with no disabilities. Last the Fried Index can be also used in elder people who have suffered a stroke in order to assess the level of frailty.
