A teaching approach of geometric shapes within computational settings for preschool students (Master thesis)

The aim of this study was to design, implement and evaluate an ICT-based teaching intervention, based on the Van Hiele model, to aid preschool students in correctly identifying geometric shapes. The intervention included a series of activities via the use of a custom digital application, developed for the aims of the research, as well as student group activities. The study followed a quasi-experimental design, with both the intervention and control groups assessed before and after the intervention. The sample consisted of a total of 32 preschool students, 17 girls and 15 boys, 18 of whom were four years old and 14 five years old. Students were randomly assigned to two groups, the intervention and the control group, while efforts were made to maintain a gender balance in both groups. The research instrument used to evaluate the intervention was a questionnaire with geometric shape recognition activities, whereas participants were also asked to justify their responses. Data analysis showed a significant improvement in the recognition of geometric shapes in the intervention group; differences between infants and preschoolers were also observed. Specifically, four-year-olds showed a significant improvement in the recognition of all shapes, whereas five-year-olds correctly identified squares and triangles. The circle activity was easy for five-year-old children, but no improvement was found for rectangles. With regard to children’s justifications, both age groups mainly focused on visual features that distinguish the shapes, but there was also a group of students that identified the properties of the shapes. Overall, the improvement was more obvious for the four-year than it was for the five-year old children. The study results are in line with research efforts that outline the importance of utilizing ICT in preschool mathematics education.
