Ο ρόλος της προγεστερόνης στην εξελικτική πορεία του ωοθυλακίου και στην υπογονιμότητα (Master thesis)

Παργιανάς, Μιχαήλ

Infertility is a common condition with psychological, economic, demographic, social and medical consequences. Infertility can be caused by a variety of factors and as a condition, may be reversible. There are many methods of assisted reproduction and possible treatments of infertility, while new theories are still developing. Progesterone is a steroid hormone that affects many aspects of reproduction, including ovulation, endometrial development and pregnancy. The multiple and complex function of progesterone in the female reproductive system and in various signaling pathways, make it a key factor worth investigating for both the mechanisms by which it is involved and as a therapeutic agent. The effect of progesterone on certain factors of the mTOR pathway, make it capable of regulating the expression of certain factors of the mTOR signaling pathway in the human myometrium. While the effects of the hormone can occur from the time- period before childbearing to the time of birth. In addition, the P4-PGRMC1 pathway has been found in several studies as an influencer of the development of primitive follicles, while progesterone is acting as a regulator of follicle development. Progesterone is used as a treatment to prevent miscarriages and to improve the chances of a successful IVF, but also to maintain the viability of the oocytes. Of course, more studies need to be carried out to establish these effects of progesterone.
