The science of Forensic Medicine is a branch of the Medical science, which by applying the scientific knowledge from various scientific fields, mainly medicine and exact sciences, according to procedures as laid down by law, draws conclusions which it makes available to Justice aiming at the verification of truth. Nowadays, Forensic Medicine includes partly specialized scientific Branches and specializations, such as Thanatology, Forensic Anthropology, Forensic Pathology, Forensic Genetics, Forensic Odontology etc., the contribution of which to the evolution of Forensic Medicine is of utmost importance for the revelation of truth and for the justice for offenses. The aim of the present dissertation is to define the role of the Forensic Expert in the modern Greek reality, through an introspective description and analysis of his professional capacity, with legal, philosophic and ethical arguments and with the general objective to trace the moral dilemmas resulting from the performance of the forensic acts that he carries out during the execution of his duties. The role of the Forensic Expert in modern times is complex and multidimensional, while it requires expanded interdisciplinary sufficiency, development of his skills with continuing training, objectivity, integrity and moral judgment. The bioethical stamping of the role of the Forensic Expert in the everyday practical performance of his duties ought to include the protection of the basic principles of Bioethics, namely Respect for Autonomy, non-Harmfulness, Benefaction or Usefulness and Justice, while at the same time complying with the national and international rules for the practice of the profession of forensic medicine.
