Otherness in children’s books for preschool and early school age (Bachelor thesis)

The present thesis deals with the matter of otherness and the way it is presented as a subject to be managed in children’s literature. In the first part of the thesis, we examine theoretical matters that concern children’s literature and the concept of otherness, such as the roles of children’s literature and especially its socializing role, or the relation of ideology and socialization. Moreover, the first part of the thesis defines terms relevant to our research, such as stereotypes and prejudices, while emphasis is given to matters that concern culture, identity, multiculturalism and the models for education in a multicultural society. In the second part of our thesis, we analyse the contents of a sample of 12 contemporary illustrated children’s books by Greek and foreign authors, which have been translated into Greek. The objective of this research is to observe the multiple depictions of the “Other” in the contemporary literature for young readers as well as the ways in which they deal with the question of otherness. The conclusions of this research show that the children’s books of our sample both reveal the racist attitudes of the dominant groups and at the same time they propose different ways of dealing with otherness.
