Background: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an auto-immune neurological disorder with increasing incidence. Fingolimod consists a recently introduced Disease-modifying Drug (DMD) having a beneficial effect on the clinical course of MS. Macula Lutea (ML) is a significant marker of non-response to DMD treatment, in cases of shortening, and of adverse events, in cases of ML edema, leading to a change of DMD. Hence, monitoring the size of ML in MS patients is of primary importance. Aim: To investigate the size of ML in patients with MS after the use of fingolimod treatment. Methods: The study sample consisted of 21 MS patients assessed through the use of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) at baseline and after one year (mean 12.17 months). Demographic and medical related variables such as age, gender, time of using fingolimod and time since the diagnosis of MS were also recorded. Results: There were insignificant correlations between the time using fingolimod with macula diameter in the first measurement of the right and left eye (p=0.765 & 0.856 respectively) and in the second measurement of the right and left eye (p=0.526 & 0.509 respectively). The time interval between the two measurements did not have a correlation to the diameter of macula for the left (p=0.693) and the right eye (p=0.389). No statistically significant relationships were also noted for the subgroups analyzed. Conclusions: The present study supports that fingolimod is not related to a change in the diameter of macula in multiple sclerosis patients. These findings support the safety and efficacy of fingolimod as a DMD. Due to the need to further investigate fingolimod’s long term-efficacy and adverse reactions, future research should be intensified.
