Interdialytic aerobic exercise has been shown to have a positive impact on both the improvement of the prognosis of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and the efficacy of hemodialysis in the management of CKD. Aerobic exercise was also shown to trigger an inflammatory response causing increased white blood cell death, potentially through triggering leucosyte apoptosis. We have investigated the effects of a regime of interdialytic aerobic exercise on the levels of white blood cell apoptosis in the blood of a cohort of CKD patients who have been subjected to hemodialysis. The ratio of living, apoptotic and necrotic cells in circulation was determined by specific staining of isolated leukocytes obtained both prior to and post exercise. Although the ratio of circulating live white blood cells was shown to decrease post exercise, no significant change was observed in the levels of leukocyte apoptosis. The opposite was true of the levels of leukocyte necrosis potentially hinting towards necrosis as the causative factor for white blood cell death.
