Meaning, attribution of causes and management of student behaviors by primary school teachers (Bachelor thesis)

This diploma dissertation, presents the terms such as those of the medical model and the social model of interpretation of disability. Specifically, they are linked to the term medicalization, which has made its appearance in recent years. The term labeling is examined and defined through interpretations given by scientists during the 20th century. At the same time, the degree of use of labeling by teachers in interpreting divergent student behaviors is studied. This labeling is directly related to the classification of students in the diagnostic categories defined by the educational policy.
Also, follows a reference to the legal framework of Greece, which concerns the referral of disabled children to institutions and structures of special education. Reference is made to the role of the Educational and Counseling Center (E.C.C.), as well as to its utilization by primary education teachers for the purpose of diagnosing disorders. There is a report to special education structures, such as the special school, the integration department and the parallel support. Specifically, their role and the way of action are presented in order to integrate disabled children.
Furthermore, in the present work, presented the results of the research carried out in order to identify the causes of the behaviors of children by the primary education teachers. These causes concern both the general causes of the occurrence of the behaviors, as well as the specific causes of the triggering of the behaviors at the time of the manifestation of the behaviors to be studied. At the same time, the feelings of the teachers who participated in the present research are presented, regarding what they would experience in general for the student but especially in the moment of manifestation of the reactions within the classroom. In fact, the results of the present research include the management strategies proposed by primary school teachers, including both direct and indirect practices that they would seek to use both inside and outside the school context.
