Dramatic Play as a tool for the development of verbal and non-verbal communication and the cultivation of cooperation in multilingual groups of students (Bachelor thesis)

This study presents a research that has been implemented at kindergarten in the city of Alexandroupoli, at a class of 16 pupils a great percent of which were bilingual or foreign. The methodology was based on an action research model and its target was to examine whether dramatic play in the nursery school could have a positive impact in the development of the verbal and non-verbal communications skills but also enhance the cooperation of the pupils. For this program a number of dramatic plays were designed which took place daily for 13 days. The process of data collection was based on the classroom observation method, the data of which were recorded in a daily calendar and a rubric scale. The data recording of the rubric scale was done in two stages, before the implementation of the activities and after it. The impact of the dramatic play was the result of the difference of the two stages. After the action research it was observed that there was a positive effect on the communication between the pupils as well as the interaction of bilingual pupils and the rest of the class. However no positive impact was observed regarding the cooperation between the pupils. This is possible due to the small size of the sample and to the limited time of the research as the pupils’ behaviors could not be counted in depth. Moreover, it was difficult to design another cycle of action research. The study separated in two parts. Firstly, the theoretical part which refers to verbal and non-verbal communication, bilingualism as well as the educative value of Theater in Education and especially of dramatic play. Secondly the research part presents the methodology, the activities that took place in the classroom, the observation as well as the conclusions
