How the pre-school educator understands his/her role in introducing the concept of death to the class (Bachelor thesis)

The meaning of death was always freighting people and it has been a taboo. The present study examines the view of kindergarten teachers of introducing death to the classroom and their role in this attempt. In order to emerge the perceptions of teachers, a qualitative research was conducted. Ten active kindergarten teachers took part in this research, who at that time they were working in the prefecture of Evros. An interview guide with thematic axes was used to conduct the semi-structured interviews to coordinate the discussion. We used thematic analysis, as it provides flexibility to the researcher to examine his data (Isari & Purkos, 2015). Thematic analysis revealed twelve thematic categories concerning teachers' experiences of the death incident in kindergarten, children reporting of death, the organization of loss management courses, the benefits and risks that mortality can cause in preschool education and the training of the participants in the management of such issues. The results of the research showed that death exists as an event in kindergartens and is understood from preschool children. The majority of teachers' self-reported reactions to loss management were linked to literature on the use of appropriate mourning practices in schools. However, most of them had no relevant training in managing death in children aged three to six. Teachers’ desire to include death as a concept to teach in kindergartens was evident. Furthermore, they expressed the need to clarify their role, in order to avoid to harm their students’ psychological balance.
