The education of women in the greek schools of Constantinople and Izmir (19th century-1922) (Master thesis)

The present Master’s thesis deals with the issue of women’s education, in the regions of Constantinople and Izmir, in 19th century until 1922. In particular the evolution of women’s education and the preconditions for the organizations of a systematic women’s education are presented. Then, the establishment of girl’s schools in these areas, their way of organization and operation, their physiognomy, the content of studies, their goal and purpose are mentioned. The second part contains the research procedure, which is conducted using the qualitative method. More specifically, content analysis is used as part of historical research. The content analysis includes the use of magazines of that time as primary resources. The research helped contributes to better understanding the goals and objectives of women’s education as well as the model of women and female identity formed by women’s education.
