Human activities have contributed to the modern ecological destruction. Various types of waste have exhausted natural resources and polluted the environment. This is worrying for the future of the planet and the quality of life of younger generations. Nature shows us the way out: Nature does not produce garbage simply because it “recycles” everything. The realization of environmental education programs in schools “invests” in environmental awareness of the young with the aim of building environmental values which will contribute to sustainable development locally and globally. The first and theoretical part of this dissertation addresses environmental issues created by excessive waste. In order to find a solution, the chapter examines: a) how waste can be turned to recyclable material, b) the pedagogical framework of environmental education as a means of disseminating environmentally-friendly behaviors in schools, and c) environmental awareness as an aim of environmental education programs. In addition, for the purposes of this thesis it was necessary to offer a description of the way minority schools operate and discuss the value of environmental education programs in these schools. The second part of this thesis describes in detail the phases of the realization of an environmental education program on recycling at the minority school of Roussa with the aim of building environmental awareness both with regard to students and the local community. This program was realized mainly through the project method and was based on cooperation, interdisciplinarity and student-based learning. In order to achieve the aims set, the activities selected were pleasant for the students. Some examples of such activities: theatrical performances, walking in nature and making best use of the school yard. The third and last part of this dissertation presents the results of the program and discusses its impact. In particular, the program strengthened the relationship of students with nature as well as their interest for environmental issues. Students understood their responsibility to society. They recycled consciously since they understood the problem in its real global dimensions. In this framework, they discovered their artistic and creative talents and familiarized themselves with environmental terminology and the use of Greek language
