Chronic illness as a condition in which limitations and deficits in physical and mental health are found, often leads inevitably to problems of reduced social well-being and functionality of the individual. This situation is particularly beneficial both for the patient himself and for his family, which is sometimes called upon to modify their daily lives to adapt to the needs of the affected member. One such chronic disease is Cystic Fibrosis. It is the most frequently occurring genetic disorder among children of the Caucasian race. The most frequent symptoms appear in the lungs and digestive system, while developmental disorders often occur. In the present study, a systematic review of the literature, mainly of recent years, was carried out in relation to the effect of cystic fibrosis on children and their families. The database used to search for published articles was Scholar Google. The key words used in this search were: "cystic fibrosis", "kids hospitalization", "parents of children with cystic fibrosis", "siblings of children with cystic fibrosis", "cystic fibrosis therapy", "future uncertainties", "growing up with cystic fibrosis", "kids cystic fibrosis transplant". No time limit of the published articles was used in an attempt to study the development of science. The bulk of the articles are from the last twenty years. A total of 38 articles, books and websites were studied. The total of the studies had at least 2 of the keywords in the search. The most relevant articles were selected and those that were accessible in their entirety. Articles and texts that were narrative reviews and did not follow the rules of scientific writing of a paper were excluded. This was followed by the categorization of the articles according to the research questions they answered and the study of them. In conclusion, the chronic disease and especially the case of cystic fibrosis has a strong effect both on the sick child himself and on his family. The severity and areas affected by the disease vary. It is necessary to do further research as well as more clinical studies on the effect that the disease has on the family and caregivers as well as on the quality and prolongation of life that patients seem to gain with new gene therapies.
