Education in anarchism (Master thesis)

The aim of this study is to examine and analyze how the ideology of anarchism perceives education. It tries to answer questions about what anarchism wants to teach children,what are the basic principles of anarchism, what is the role of education within anarchist theory and of course what new brings anarchism to education, what answers anarchism gives to the problems that arise and what are the importance and benefits of pedagogical practices in anarchist education. First and foremost, I try to investigate the term “education” by asking questions about the role of education and how the sociopolitical context within education is placed affects the purpose of education. Then I study the Age of Modernity and specifically I start with the emergence of the Enlightenment Movement in the 18th century and finish in the late 20th century. Throughout this process I present changes that were made at the political, social and economic level and at the same time I present the construction and organization of the education system during the Age of Modernity. Afterwards I display the course of the ideology of anarchism along with the emergence of other political movements and ideologies, while unfolding and describing the basic aspects and values of ideology. Then I describe in detail the way in which great ideologues of anarchism have perceived the role of education in human life and the alternatives which they have proposed, always based on the main values of anarchism, such us equality, freedom and solidarity. Thereafter I present four anarchic education structures which describe how anarchic visionaries tried to apply the ideology of anarchism to education. In the last part of the study I demonstrate the results of my study.
