The views of primary school English language teachers on the use of museums in their teaching (Master thesis)

In recent years, museums have invested in strengthening their educational role and their relationship with Schools, offering educational programs specifically designed for students. Educators, on their side, can play a significant role by contributing to the connection between the museum visit and the learning procedure. The present study investigates whether and to what extent primary school English teachers in Greece make use of the educational role of the museum in their course. More specifically, the research focused on their views regarding the educational role of the museum and the use of museum educational programs in their teaching practice. Moreover, English teachers expressed their opinions not only on the difficulties they encounter regarding the implementation of an English educational program in the museum, but also on the ways the collaboration between School and Museum can be reinforced. The methodology that was considered appropriate for the needs of the specific study was qualitative research and, in particular, the methodological tool of semi-structured interviews was selected, so as to answer the research questions mentioned above. The processing of the resulting information was carried out using the method of thematic content analysis. The findings of the survey revealed that English teachers are aware of the educational role of the museum; however they have not realized how it can actually be integrated in their course. Furthermore, their answers revealed various problems and limitations they encounter, which prevent them from using the museum for educational purposes. In addition, English teachers made several suggestions regarding the way the collaboration between School and Museum can be improved, so that the latter can be used as an educational tool for the English course. On the whole, it was concluded that action needs to be taken and issues should be resolved so that English teachers are able to use the museum as a teaching tool. On the one hand, Schools need to implement an organized plan in order to integrate the museum into the educational process regarding the English course and, on the other hand, Museums need to approach schools and their teachers in a more effective way. Finally, it was proposed that, since this particular research constitutes a first step for the study of a field that has not yet been investigated in Greece, the issue can be further studied in the future.
